Choosing your wedding party is a big decision but should also be an easy one. Although, it can be challenging to narrow down a large friend group or choose a maid of honor/best man without hurting feelings. If you’re feeling stressed about the thought of choosing your wedding party, continue reading for a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind to help you reach a decision.

Do: Put Yourself First

This is the most essential tip in all aspects of wedding planning. Remember that it is your special day and you should not make important decisions based on other’s opinions. Choose individuals that you truly want next to you on your wedding day. Real friends will respect your decision even if they are not asked. A way to include even more friends in your wedding plans is to invite them to your pre-wedding events.

Don’t: Blindly Follow Tradition

Traditionally, you will see a bride with all-female bridesmaids and a groom with all-male groomsmen, but this is certainly not something you need to follow. Have a “man of honor” or “best woman” in your wedding party if that is what you desire. There are also no rules about how to dress your wedding party; some couples prefer to stick to one color or style, while others let their wedding party choose their own attire.

Do: Consider Family

It may be obvious to have your brother or sister in your wedding party if you’re close, but even if you don’t have the best relationship, it’s important to consider them. They most likely want the best for you regardless of your circumstances now. If you ask and sense their reluctance, you can always tell them it is their choice. This way you are putting your best foot forward with family and trying to include them in an important milestone in your life. Who knows this could bring you closer.

Don’t: Stress About An Equal Number

You may want you and your spouse to have an equal number of attendants, but if you don’t, that’s okay! Neither of you needs to choose more people just for an equal number. There are tricks to making an uneven wedding party work; such as doubling up groomsmen with bridesmaids as they walk down the aisle, allowing your attendants to walk solo, etc. Your photographer will know where to place each attendant in group photos so no need to worry about the photos. Just surround yourself with people you love and want to be a witness to your commitment to your partner.
