If you’re looking for a honeymoon destination that has it all — adventure, luxurious beaches, bright blue waters, exotic animals and ancient ruins — come to Belize! This Central American country offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, unspoiled jungles teeming with wildlife and ancient palaces, pyramids and ruins. Check out this seven-day itinerary for a picture-perfect Belize honeymoon.

Beaches and Cayes

Start your Belize honeymoon by flying into Belize City, where you can catch a flight to Ambergris Caye, the largest island in Belize. Here, you can enjoy snorkeling in San Pedro at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, take a scuba lesson, or go deep sea fishing. From here, you can take a water taxi to Caye Caulker.

Spend day two enjoying Caye Caulker’s laid-back vibe. If you like scuba diving, don’t miss the nearby Great Blue Hole. Take a tour of Shark Ray Alley or a bird watching tour in the local Forest Reserve — or, just eat, swim and bask in the sun.

Mayan Ruins

For days three and four of your honeymoon, fly to San Ignacio to explore the nearby Mayan ruins. Belize is home to a number of Mayan ruins, including the Actun Tunichil Mayan (ATM) caves, Xunantunich, Caracol and Tikal. The ATM caves are not to be missed and require a full day of swimming and hiking with a tour guide. Here, you can see the Cave of the Crystal Maiden, a young sacrifice victim whose calcified bones will sparkle in the light of your flashlights.

However, you may want to spend a day exploring the ruins before visiting the ATM caves, so as to have dry sneakers for hiking through the pyramids and temples of Tikal, Xunantunich or Caracol. Xunantunich is probably the easiest site to reach from San Ignacio; it’s only about 10 minutes away by car, or you can take a romantic 90-minute horseback ride to the ruins. The other two sites are about two hours away by car.

Jungles and (More) Beaches

Spend days five, six and seven of your Belize vacation in Placencia, about a three to four hour drive from San Ignacio. Hire a private shuttle to schedule extra stops along the way at locations like the inland Blue Hole. In Placencia, kick back and relax on miles of sandy white beaches, and wander the town of Placencia proper, which is home to the world’s narrowest street. Shop in town and go ocean kayaking as the sun sets, or rent a fishing pole and try your luck.

Day six is a great day to tour Monkey River, spotting birds, monkeys and other wildlife. On day seven, take a final snorkeling trip to nearby Laughing Bird Caye before heading home.

With its pristine beaches, ancient ruins, jungles and coral reefs, Belize is a world-class honeymoon destination. Start your lives together off on the right foot, and take your honeymoon in Belize.
